Hypersynchronous SER Drive

Hypersynchronous SER (Slip Recovery Drives) in a control room.

The Slip Energy Recovery (SER) Drive is a  well proven technology that are used especially for large power motoring systems. SER Drives are highly efficient in its class, superb reliability, compact and highly capable of controlling very precise motor speed while recovering slip energy in the Wound Rotor Induction Motors (WRIM).

The Hypersynchronous SER Drive recovers excess energy that is supplied from the stator terminals (slip energy) and feeds this energy back into the grid. With the recovery of slip energy, the user will achieve very high efficiency ratios, thus reducing electricity consumption and reducing carbon emissions.

Main advantages of Slip Energy Recovery (SER) Drives compared to classic Variable Speed Systems (VSS) are:

  1. Redundancy - SER Drives may have a LRS/RCD as a backup drive in case of any potential failure in the starting drive. This will prevent any equipment downtime that will result in loss of production in critical applications.

  2. Reliability and Robustness - SER Drives are designed with a large safety factor to allow for one of the highest MTBF in drive technology. They are also simple to maintain and  are air-cooled.

  3. Top-class Energy Efficiency - The recovery of slip energy through the SER Drive to the grid has proved to be one of the highest efficiency drive compared to other technology.

  4. Hypersynchronous Speed - SER Drives allow the user to increase production without the need to replace the motor. This is due to the capability of the SER Drive to run motors above the rated speed without any torque losses, compared to other drive technology that is required to reduce torque to maintain the Torque/Frequency Ratio.
